Breaking Away

Breaking Away: A Harrowing True Story of Resilience, Courage, and Triumph Hardcover – October 20, 2015
Author: Patrick O’Sullivan ID: 1443444669

Review

“Patrick O’Sullivan’s story is the ultimate cautionary tale in all of sports. . . . . That Patrick O’Sullivan survived his childhood to play in the NHL is a testament to his talent. That he tells it all in Breaking Away is a testament to his courage.” (Bob McKenzie, TSN, and author of Hockey Confidential)

“A tragic and at times disturbing account of abuse. . . . I hope that writing this brave and honest book and raising awareness of this troubling issue allows Patrick to find peace of mind.” (Elliotte Friedman, Hockey Night in Canada)

“An inspirational story and a cautionary tale. You find yourself rooting for a kid who lived through a nightmare just to play hockey and pursue his dream. . . . No one should have to go through the awful stuff that Patrick endured growing up.” (Bobby Ryan, Ottawa Senators)

“Patrick O’Sullivan had the will to survive in awful circumstances that would break almost anybody else. That he survived and played professional hockey prove his strength of character. Breaking Away is not just about the damage done but also moving on and at long last finding happiness.” (Todd Marinovich, former NFL and CFL quarterback)

The cautionary ugly story behind the scenes, that rarely is brought up in the public but should be. The story of Patricks life on and off the ice is touching as well as informative. A talented kid, crazy-unhealthy family relationships that cause physical and psychological damages no kid/teenager should experience. It also shows the holes of old-school NHL management still being enforced and so a prospect kid can have trouble finding/getting the help he should have.

I recommend reading it to any parent (or parent to be), even if you aren’t an hockey fan…

Tnx, Patrick and Gare for your work… As a Kings fan I just thank you for your time on the Kings and salute you Patrick for fighting through the issues and wish you nothing but peaceful happiness in your future…

I read this book with heart in my throat. I know it’s a true account because my sibling was married to one of John O’s siblings. We didn’t hear of the abuse until after the last beating and when Patrick finally got some help. And he was the one who had to save himself. I don’t blame him a bit for cutting off all contact. His mother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, extended family, teachers, coaches and other hockey parents bear a great deal of blame. They had to have seen and did sometimes witness John’s criminal behaviour or saw the after effects. Patrick is brave young man and I hope he continues to heal well and have a happier life going forward.

A history of a very real problem in the world right now.
