The author leads through the process of developing a physical product in a cogent and practical manner. The author starts from determining if there is a business behind the idea, through branding, fundraising options, scaling and basic legal considerations. A book worth your time to read.
From cover to cover, this is the definitive guide to what you need to build a hardware company. Startups are difficult and hardware startups are like "expert mode", with all the usual challenges and then some. This book walks you through them. About the Author
PATRICK O’SULLIVAN was the OHL and CHL rookie of the year in 2002 and the AHL rookie of the year in 2005. He remains the all-time leader in games, goals, assists and points for the Mississauga/Niagara franchise in the OHL. He played 334 games over eight seasons with the Los Angeles Kings, Edmonton Oilers, Carolina Hurricanes, Minnesota Wild and Phoenix Coyotes in the NHL. He played in three World Junior Championships and is all-time second in games played for the USA in tournament history. He scored the gold-medal winning goal for the United States team at the world junior championships in 2004, the first gold medal in the team’s history. The 30-year-old now lives in southwest Florida with his wife and two sons.

The cautionary ugly story behind the scenes, that rarely is brought up in the public but should be. The story of Patricks life on and off the ice is touching as well as informative. A talented kid, crazy-unhealthy family relationships that cause physical and psychological damages no kid/teenager should experience. It also shows the holes of old-school NHL management still being enforced and so a prospect kid can have trouble finding/getting the help he should have.
I recommend reading it to any parent (or parent to be), even if you aren’t an hockey fan…

I read this book with heart in my throat. I know it’s a true account because my sibling was married to one of John O’s siblings. We didn’t hear of the abuse until after the last beating and when Patrick finally got some help. And he was the one who had to save himself. I don’t blame him a bit for cutting off all contact. His mother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, extended family, teachers, coaches and other hockey parents bear a great deal of blame. They had to have seen and did sometimes witness John’s criminal behaviour or saw the after effects. Patrick is brave young man and I hope he continues to heal well and have a happier life going forward.

Through the story of one mans experience after Hurricane Katrina, Eggers draws an indelible picture of Bush-era crisis management. Abdulrahman Zeitoun, a successful Syrian-born painting contractor, decides to stay in New Orleans and protect his property while his family flees. After the levees break, he uses a small canoe to rescue people, before being arrested by an armed squad and swept powerlessly into a vortex of bureaucratic brutality. When a guard accuses him of being a member of Al Qaeda, he sees that race and culture may explain his predicament. Eggers, compiling his account from interviews, sensibly resists rhetorical grandstanding, letting injustices speak for themselves. His skill is most evident in how closely he involves the reader in Zeitouns thoughts. Thrown into one of a series of wire cages, Zeitoun speculates, with a contractors practicality, that construction of his prison must have begun within a day or so of the hurricane.

The New York Times Book Review called Zeitoun “the stuff of great narrative fiction,” and critics agreed that Eggers tells Zeitoun’s tragic story without the postmodern trickery and tirades he has exhibited in previous works. Instead, he allows the story to tell itself while imbuing Zeitoun’s tragedy with deep sympathy and emotion. Although Eggers didn’t witness Hurricane Katrina’s devastation firsthand, he captures the experience through Zeitoun’s eyes and approaches his subject very intimately. A few critics noted that while this perspective was convincing, it required “faith on the part of the reader that everything in the book happened as it appears here” (San Francisco Chronicle). But this was a minor complaint in an overall unforgettable story.

First off, Zeitoun painted my house about 8 years ago so maybe I’m a little bit biased. I also think Dave Eggers is a great writer (doubly biased, perhaps). This story needs to be told to a large audience and Mr. Eggers is just the person to tell it. Maybe we can knock Eggers for the simplistic style he chose to write this book. On the other hand, this story frankly didn’t need much artistic enhancement. It is shocking on its own accord and told in a very straightforward manner. Appropriate for the material, I believe.
Every American NEEDS to read this book. What we find in it is an America that lost its core. It is truly shocking that no matter how bad things were in New Orleans immediately following Katrina (most reporting was inaccurate and sensationalized), we are still Americans with common beliefs in our system of rights. That these rights were tossed out the window is appalling.
Mr. Zeitoun is a kind and gentle man. His signs are ubiquitous in New Orleans and he is a stranger to no one and well liked by all who have met him. That he could be mistreated is a crime and an outrage. That others were rounded up and treated even worse is one of the worst black eyes on our country. As I read this book I just kept saying out loud over and over again, "This cannot be America."
I had never read anything by Dave Eggers before, but his reputation set some pretty high expectations. I am a fan of narrative non-fiction and non-fiction, and enjoy books like "In Thin Air" or "The Colony." I picked up the book yesterday, and finished it this morning. It was spectacular.
The writing style is perfect. It is not over the top with descriptions, but still makes you feel as if you are there, canoeing along in the streets of New Orleans. The subject matter is interesting, not just in a "can’t stop watching this train wreck" sort of way, but because it ties together Hurricane Katrina and 9/11, two of the largest national events of the last decade. I never thought or knew about much beyond what I saw on TV regarding Katrina. This book thoroughly explores one story of one family, but manages tell it from a perspective that everyone can understand.
Much like the book Three Cups of Tea brought attention to the plight of women in Pakistan, I hope that Zeitoun will bring to light the problems and issues that still need attention in the US and in New Orleans.
Eggers took the main event, Katrina, and by telling the Zietouns’ story, made it of human scale.
I’m rambling–all I can say is, I think this book is worth a read for everyone. It isn’t preachy-it is interesting. I learned a lot about many different subjects. I hope it ends up on the best seller list and stays there for a long time. Unlike some books that end up on the best seller lists, this one really deserves to be there.
Zeitoun is a creampuff to read and then there is a huge lump in your stomach where the content boils. I finished it in a couple of days, finishing on a cross-country plane flight and got off in a furious mood that didn’t wear off until the end of a hot bath and a tall cold rum drink. Massive injustice has been done in New Orleans and this book follows it right down to the foundations. You won’t read another word about Katrina without finding your thoughts completely reoriented. Let’s hear it for the truth.

I got an advanced copy of this book back in January. When I see these one star diatribes I know none of these people got even 20 pages into it. This is not a sales book–Warren is not telling us why we should believe this or support this. Rather, it’s more of a journal of how she got started, the luck and decisions that led her from job to job–and how she ultimately ended up in board rooms trying to convince bankers that short-term success wasn’t always in their best interest. Her studies of bankruptcy and credit cards and ballooned mortgages show us that it’s not just about individuals but how our economy is affected as a whole.
Of course, you can disagree with her liberal positions on a lot of things, but again, the book isn’t trying to sway the reader to get on the bandwagon. If anything, she’s more like a scientist: she shows evidence of patterns and statistics that show how a shrinking middle class threatens our future and how tax loop holes only serve those who don’t even need them. It’s written with eloquence and candor (and sometimes a bit of frustration) but for the most part it tells of how she got where she is and why she can’t just ignore the laws that truly threaten lower class families. When she wrote THE TWO INCOME TRAP a decade ago she showed us that we get fooled into believing that hard work always pays off and that doing he right thing will always protect you in the end. Not so. In an economy like this one, the strong always maintain greater control and the weak stay weak–or slip even further behind.
Is she right every time?–of course not. There really ARE poor people who buck the system–just like there are very rich people who do as well.
I don’t usually read a lot of autobiographies, but I’m a fan of Elizabeth Warren and I’ve heard good things about this book, so I decided to give it a try. I figured I’d start on it this weekend and finish it later in the week, but as soon as I got into it, I was hooked. The writing is very good and I found myself laughing out loud at times (such as when the author describes setting her kitchen on fire).
The first few chapters cover the author’s life before she got involved in politics: how she grew up middle class until her father got sick and lost his job; how she earned a debate scholarship and went to college (despite her mother’s desire that she focus on finding a husband), then dropped out of college to get married and have a baby. How she finished her college degree and then a law degree, while raising two kids. Then – in what would eventually lead her to becoming nationally known – how she ended up getting involved in bankruptcy law and research into why people declare bankruptcy. As a bankruptcy expert, she lead the (ultimately unsuccessful) fight to keep the law from being changed to enhance banking profits at the expense of those who would no longer have access to bankruptcy protection.
After her work on bankruptcy, she eventually ended up leading the COP panel, which oversaw TARP (Trouble Assets Relief Program), more commonly known as the bank bailout. The panel unfortunately had no real power – they could take testimony, but could not compel people to testify, nor could they insist on being present when Treasury (which didn’t appear particularly interested in oversight) made the decisions on how to spend the $700 billion that Congress had authorized to bail out the financial system.
